The Kununurra Historical Society was inaugurated on June 5th 1986, and in 2021 we commemorated 35 years as a Society and 20 years in the ('new' ;^) purpose-built Archive and Museum facility. You will be supporting the valuable work being accomplished to collect and preserve the records of our past, and be kept in touch with the fascinating history being placed online. Perhaps you have photographs or other archival material you'd like to see preserved in our purpose-built archive facility.

Please join us at KHS from the Membership Form and KHS (BSB & A/C) Bank Details provided below.

(You will be helping to preserve this history & make it accessible to all! Thanks in Advance! (TIA :^)

KHS is offering an annual membership, however we encourage ALL Past & Present Residents of Kununurra, being part of (y)our history, to join as Life Members (equal to 10 x an annual membership) to support the work of the Society, continuously receive updates, avoid messy renewals every year (for us & for you ;^) and as the best value for money.

(We forgot to say in this page's title, "Please!" Join KHS Now ;^)

Your Records of Significance

Whether you are an individual, family, organization or business, and have records of significance to the history of the Ord, please consider their future preservation, in the Kununurra Historical Society purpose built Archive facility. It is of great importance to preserve Kununurra's history, with an ever transient population, the KHS is actively seeking to collect, original or digital photographic collections, and documents, of significance to this history, from past, present and future residents. However small your collection it may be of significance, for example a photograph may give a new angle on something. KHS aims to preserve and welcome the original photographic prints or slides, films, videos, documents or other objects in collections. These donated records can also be digitised to a high standard (at present 5500 pixels on the long side of an image) and returned as fully documented digital images to the donor on a USB memory stick, SD card (or other existing or as yet un-described storage device of the future ;^) - If archival preservation is not wanted, original collections can be digitised and returned to the donor, if required. If you know of records that should be preserved for the future, please  Contact KHS - ALSO see - Your Kununurra History.

KHS has been actively collecting as indicated by the number of archives collected; in 2016 - 123 new collections ; in 2017 - 114 new collections ; in 2018 - 152 new collections ; 112 new collections in 2019 added and so far in 2020 we have received 48 new collections (to May 15th 2020), which have been added to the KHS archive. An archive or collection could be multiple documents, maps, or 1050 x boxed 35mm slides (as we received in March 2020) or museum objects.

Although we do have 125 members, most are spread around Australia with about 20 local members, of whom around 5-10 members regularly attend our monthly meetings. We would welcome more members as Kununurra has had many more than this live here over the fifty-five+ years of the town, who would be interested in this history, so there is a great potential for new members and we need you to come forward as there are lifetimes of work to do in the archive!
